Learning Lab: Advocacy in Higher Education
What is Advocacy in higher education?
- Difference between political (policies/legislation that supports all students) and partisan (policies specific to an ideological platform)
- Advocating at a local, state, and national level (how to find out who your legislators are, how to track legislation, etc.)
- Advocating for policies that support all students, including affordability and maintaining/restoring/increasing funding for post-secondary education opportunities (including state and federal grant money)
- Advocating for transparency in college admissions practices
What does Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Belonging look like in 2026 and how can we, as IECs, advocate for all students, including students in the following populations (with potential guest presenters): Neurodivergent students, differently abled students, LGBTQIA+ students, students of color, first-generation students, socioeconomically disadvantaged students, undocumented students.
How can IEC's work be advocating for all students (including pro-bono services, providing free college admissions workshops for the community, etc.)
